GRGR/West Announces Fundraising Results From REAL BAD XXI

Grass Roots Gay Rights West (GRGR/West), producers of the annual REAL BAD fundraising party which follows San Francisco’s world-renowned Folsom Street Fair, today announced the fundraising results from REAL BAD XXI, which was held on Sunday, September 27, 2009. Despite a difficult economic backdrop, REAL BAD XXI was a sell-out success, raising $150,000 for worthy beneficiary organizations delivering sustainable local impact in the San Francisco area. As of REAL BAD XXI, over $1 Million dollars has been donated to community beneficiary organizations over the event’s history.

Four selected LGBT health and community service organizations are sharing the funds raised, which include 100 percent of the money collected from general admission ticket sales. The beneficiary organizations are Dimensions Clinic, which offers medical and mental health services to queer, transgender, and questioning youth, ages 12 to 25; Maitri, one of San Francisco’s most respected and valued resources in providing care to people severely debilitated by AIDS; openhouse, a housing, services, and advocacy organization with a goal to ensure safe housing and support services that are sensitive to the needs of LGBT seniors; and Visual Aid, a nonprofit organization founded to help preserve, present, and promote the work of Bay Area professional artists living with HIV/AIDS, Breast Cancer, and other life-threatening illnesses.

“I’m very proud of the results of this year’s REAL BAD, which pushed us over the $1 Million milestone, and were achieved despite major economic challenges. I am equally proud of the team that worked so hard to put on such an amazingly fun and successful event. Every year we improve on the party itself and how we prepare for it, as well as grow and mature as a non-profit organization,” stated Ed Tolan, event chair for REAL BAD XXI. “I would especially like to thank our circle of friends – sponsors, hosts, volunteers and attendees – for making REAL BAD XXI such a fun and friendly event while raising much needed funds for our community.”

Thank You

The REAL BAD Working Group and GRGR/West would like to thank our sponsors, hosts, volunteers and attendees for supporting REAL BAD XXI. Many months of careful planning, eager support from our fantastic sponsors, much hard work by dozens of volunteers, and thousands of tickets sold by Hosts to their friends – all culminated in a nine-hour dance experience unlike any other! We hope that everyone who attended REAL BAD XXI or participated in some other way enjoyed their experience as we raised much-needed funds for our worthy beneficiary organizations.

About REAL BAD and GRGR/West

REAL BAD, the dance party immediately following the Folsom Street Fair, is an annual fundraising event benefiting LGBT charities with local impact in San Francisco. REAL BAD is completely volunteer produced, and is distinct in that the costs of producing the event are underwritten entirely by the party’s Hosts, a circle of friends who volunteer their time and resources to make REAL BAD a yearly sell-out success. This unique support enables 100% of ticket proceeds to be donated to charity. In 2009, REAL BAD XXI raised an impressive $150,000, allowing over $1 Million dollars to have been donated to worthy charities over the event’s history.

REAL BAD is produced by Grass Roots Gay Rights West (GRGR/West), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to raising and distributing funds to grassroots organizations that strengthen the diverse populations that make up San Francisco’s LGBT community. GRGR/West supports organizations that create local impact, sustainable results and/or measurable change, especially in the areas of civil rights, community development, social services, HIV/AIDS and other health-related issues.
